Because many of Norway’s matches were played on the other side of the world, the games appeared here at strange hours. People met in tents, bars, temporary outdoor arenas, by the water, and in places that would normally have been quiet or empty. I was interested less in the obvious moments of celebration, and more in what happened around them: the waiting, the tired bodies, the glow from the screens, the rain, the empty benches, the makeshift structures, and the small pockets of attention in the middle of the night. I wanted to photograph the slightly absurd beauty of people staying awake together for something taking place far away. Sometimes the crowds were large and expectant. Other times only a few people remained, wrapped in blankets or rain ponchos, watching as the night slowly began to fall apart around them.
